Facts

Lake Tahoe is approximately 22 miles long and 12 miles wide and has 72 miles of shoreline.

It is the 3rd deepest lake in North America and the 10th deepest in the world.

It is two thirds in the state of California and one third in the state of Nevada.

The water temperature near the surface generally cools to 40 F to 50 F (4-1/2 C to 10 C during February and March, and warms to 65 F to 70 F (18 C to 21 C) August and September. Below 600-700 foot depths, the water temperature remains a constant 39 F (40 C).

The amount of water that evaporates from the lake’s surface every year could supply a city the size of Los Angeles for 5 years.

The lake holds over 39 trillion gallons of water, which is enough to cover the entire state of California to a depth of 14 inches.

Recreation Tips

Among the most popular activities at the lake, there are water biking, hiking, skiing, fishing, swimming, and parasailing.

Approximately one dozen areas are available for golfing.

Overnight and day camping is available at all times.
